Mental Health

Exercise continues to be an established tool used in conjunction with other treatments for the management and prevention of many mental health conditions. While it can be an effective and useful addition or occasional alternative to existing medication.

At SAEXP we recognise that everyone is different, and their mental health journey is unique to them. Allowing us to work alongside our clients to build an exercise plan, which is effective, achievable, enjoyable and individualised. When starting exercise, we recognise that the gym environment can intimidating or unfamiliar therefore our clinic consists of fully equipped private rooms designed to make each client feel safe and supported whilst building their confidence and self-efficacy.

We are experienced with the following Mental Health conditions:

  • Anxiety disorders (e.g., PTSD, Generalised anxiety, OCD)
  • Depressive disorders (e.g., Melancholia, Dysthymia, Psychotic depression)
  • Bipolar disorder (e.g., Type I, Type II, Cyclothymic disorder, Mixed episodes)
  • Psychotic disorders (e.g., Schizophrenia disorder, Psychotic depression)
  • Schizoaffective disorder (e.g., Depression and Bipolar type)
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders (e.g., ADHD)
  • Personality disorders (e.g., Borderline disorder)
  • Gender dysphoria
  • Eating disorders (e.g., Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge eating)

Exercise can be adapted and completed in various ways to fit the individual, whether they are just getting started or have a long history of participating in exercise and sport.

Some generalised benefits of exercise for Mental Health:

  • Establishing a healthy daily routine and optimizing physical conditioning.
  • Reducing some medication related side effects.
  • Managing Co-morbidities. E.g. Cardiovascular conditions, Obesity, Osteoarthritis.
  • Improving sleep quality and quality of life.
  • Foster independence and improved mood.
