Chronic Pain And Fatigue
At SAEXP we are experienced in working with the following chronic fatigue and pain related conditions:
- Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)/Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)
- Fibromyalgia
- Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)
- Long COVID
Understandably, if you are suffering from chronic pain or fatigue, you might be avoiding exercise thinking that it will exacerbate your symptoms. When prescribed correctly, exercise has been shown to be an effective way of managing fatigue and/or pain whilst increasing your tolerance to daily activities. As each individual’s baseline level of activity and severity of symptoms is different, it is the role of an Exercise Physiologist to educate, assess and prescribe you an appropriate exercise program.
The initial phase of our program involves an educational component on how “pacing” can be used to manage your overall fatigue throughout the week. The second phase of our program is prescribing you an exercise program using “graded exercise therapy”. This involves prescribing you a program below your symptom threshold (without causing a worsening of your symptoms), then gradually, as tolerated increasing the amount of exercise followed by an increase in intensity. Everyone’s baseline and rate of progression will differ, therefore it is our role as Exercise Physiologist’s to identify what will be most effective for you.
As well as improved symptom management, other benefits of regular exercise include:
- Improved physical function
- Improved psychosocial function
- Improved sleep
- Reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes
- Improved mental health
- Improved quality of life
